27 Etiquette Rules For Our Times

Some things about being a decent individual never change — for example, it will most likely always be considered rude to sneeze on someone else; interrupting is a class faux-pas; and, the firm handshake seems to have solid staying power. The unfortunate truth about this list from Forbes is that, while many of the suggestions seem like they should be common sense, I’d be willing to bet that most of us have experience some variation or other of every single one of them.

“There’s always a tension between how much we should follow our instincts and how much we should yield to social conventions. But at times like ours, the tendency is to tilt too far toward our instincts, since the conventions are changing fast and there’s no consensus about them anyway. There’s a risk in that. You don’t know whom you might be offending or how you might be sabotaging your own success. The original etiquette manuals of Western civilization were in fact success manuals. As author Steven Pinker notes, they taught knights and nobles how to conduct themselves in the court of the king — which is where we get the concepts of courtly and courtesy.

You’ll notice a common denominator in all of them: Think about other people’s feelings first because it’s not all about maximizing your personal convenience.”

7 Things You Can Do on Friday to Make Monday Awesome

Considering the date — and the hour — this article could hardly be more appropriate. So, I’ll just let you dig right in:

“Most people get excited that Friday is here, especially if the week has been hectic and packed. But often Fridays can seem like a waste (especially before holidays). Your brain, in anticipation of the time off, just says: I have had enough! Bring on the downtime. Then the afternoon just drags on and on.

You don’t get a lot of help from your colleagues because the afternoon Friday lull is a commonly shared experience. Everyone’s already thinking about the weekend and ready to go home, so productivity drops. But instead of giving in to the impulse to window gaze and daydream, you can use the opportunity to get next week off to an awesome start.”
